Born 1960, London Hospital, Whitechapel. I spent my young years in an orphanage on the Pilgrims Way with primrose hedges and Sunday School. I was given a camera at the age of 14 and with the photographic art form began to understand the emotional power that Art can bestow, out of a dark room arose the magic of silver. I am self - taught.
For some things in life conscious knowledge is not enough. At some point we reach the edge of certainty, and no matter what instruments we use to increase perception and understanding we still cannot pass. It is this place that the work travels to; the realm of dreaming sleep and waking dreams, endeavouring to give form to the intangible like the stone that is alive. At times I have used the human body as an archetype, after all this tender frame is the home of the imagination and vehicle for the soul and by which we all navigate the world.
I continue to work with analogue film, the majority of the work is in the photomontage/collage art form. I often use the technique of marquetry to inlay one image into another, or overlaying in traditional papier -colle.
Sometimes when creating a picture and bringing the separate images together I feel as if I am taking part in a ceremony with the invisible, that summons up the spirits, shadows and ghosts that belong to us, like a seance. There is a kind of alchemy in the way two or three photographs, which may have been taken years apart, find each other. Taken from where? Taken from life? perhaps a sub-conscious thread through time emerging into the light, exploring themes of identity, transience, love and loss.
All photographs by the artist unless otherwise stated.
